Wait, what? Where? IRC! Oh yes, IRC and MSN of course. Good old days when the internet was still wired and the biggest scare you could get was that cable <g class=\"gr_ gr_34 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"34\" data-gr-id=\"34\">being<\/g> plugged out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot has changed since the wired days. Now more than 3 billion people across the globe cannot imagine the daily life without at least one chat app, that is almost 90% of the world&#8217;s population. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2702\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>1988 \u2013 Internet Relay Chat (IRC) was born in Finnland. It allowed single users or groups to chat in real-time and create forum discussions. Still has hundreds of thousands users today. <br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/6-e1547812916604.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2704\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>1992 \u2013 The first short message, SMS, was sent. It stated &#8220;Merry Christmas&#8221; and went out through the Vodafone network in the U.K. Today a staggering 16 million SMS are sent per minute.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2-e1547812605162.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2705\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>1999 \u2013 MSN Messenger was released by Microsoft. By the end of 2009 it had 330 million worldwide active users per month and could be operated in 50 languages. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/8-e1547812628301.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2706\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>2003 \u2013 Skype introduced communication via video, voice or instant messaging. Fun fact: it&#8217;s name derives from &#8220;Sky peer-to-peer&#8221; and was bought by Microsoft in 2009. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1-e1547812671224.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2708\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>2008 \u2013 Facebook Chat is set out to the world. In 2011 the app was renamed to Facebook Messenger and in 2014 separated from the main Facebook app, proving an important part of Facebook&#8217;s business model.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2709\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>2009 \u2013 Whatsapp made a revolution with free sending of texts, pictures, videos and audios; appealing to costumers who were tired of paying for sending texts. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2710\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>2011 \u2013 A clone of Whatsapp was brought to life in China. WeChat developed additional features to chatting, like payments, games and shopping and quickly gained the status of &#8220;China&#8217;s app for everything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2711\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>2013 \u2013 Slack was founded. A cloud based team collaboration tool was destined to solve the problem of team communication by bringing the conversation to another platform.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide wp-block-media-text-custom\" style=\"grid-template-columns:10% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.intheloop.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2712\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>2019 \u2013 Loop Email joins the game.
